A Parent’s Obligation
I have three children who are 17, 14, and 13. My eldest is a senior in high school. They have attended private New York City schools since forever. Hence, I have not done one iota of saving in the past dozen years. We are about to embark on the college years and the prospect of the financial commitment is absolutely terrifying to me. Nevertheless, I feel that as long as there is the possibility of pulling this off, it is my responsibility to do so. It is what we signed up for and is an obligation. With this parental obligation comes the student’s obligation, to be the best student they can be and to make the most of their educational experience. It is difficult to give this message to a kid because, since they are kids, they don’t get it yet. So I put my head down, cross my fingers that the jobs hold up, and try to survive the next four years.
